Rockery Narcissi Care

narcissi bulbs

These are the smaller cousins of the traditional English Daffodil species and produce both a wide and varied range of flower forms from small miniature trumpets to the more unusual spiked double flowers of Narcissi Rip Van Winkle.

Flowering heights vary greatly within this species from Narcissi Tete a Tete 15cm (6in) to the graceful flowers of Narcissi Thalia 40cm (16in).  See individual varieties for more details.

These truly are spectacular flower forms with a beautiful range of colours to choose from and will look superb in containers, beds, borders and indoor pots.

Growing Guide

The optimum time for planting your dwarf Narcissi types is from mid September until early December.

Rockery Narcissi species enjoy most soil types but must be free draining, add a good quality soil based compost to heavy soil conditions to help improve drainage.  For best results plant in sunny positions although varieties such as Psuedonarcissi Lobularis and Psuedonarcissi Obvallaris are equally at home in woodland conditions. Plant at depths of three times of the bulbs height.

Miniature Narcissi also make excellent potted material with firm favourites such as Narcissi Tete a Tete, Jetfire and Minnow being used for commercial purposes.

Plant your potted bulbs from mid September and store in a dark, cool place to encourage the root development and move into your desired position either in the garden or home once the shoots start to appear.

Once flowering has been completed the foliage should be allowed to die back and then removed leaving the next seasons bulb which can then be planted into the garden the following Autumn.

Store the dried bulbs in paper bags in a shed or garage until mid September.  The drying process will take several weeks so please be patient.
