Inside every true bulb is a complete miniature plant: a tiny flower shoot surrounded by fleshy scales that store food. These layers act as both insulation and a food supply, sustaining the bulb through dormancy and powering its early growth.  

There are several types of underground plant structures that are often lumped together as “bulbs,” but technically speaking, only some are true bulbs. True bulbs, like tulips, lilies, and daffodils, are made up of layers, much like an onion. Corms (e.g., crocuses), tubers (e.g., dahlias), and rhizomes (e.g., irises) are slightly different in structure, but they all serve a similar function: to store energy and ensure the plant’s survival through unfavourable seasons.  

The Life Cycle of a Flower Bulb

1. Dormancy (Late Summer to Early Autumn)  

After blooming in spring or early summer, bulbs enter a dormant phase. Above ground, the plant’s foliage begins to yellow and die back, while underground, the bulb is resting and conserving energy. Although it may look like nothing is happening, this is a crucial recovery period when the bulb is rebuilding its reserves for the next growth cycle.  

2. Root Development (Autumn )  

Autumn is the ideal time to plant most spring-blooming bulbs. Once in the ground, the bulbs begin to develop roots even though there’s no visible growth above soil. These roots help the bulb absorb nutrients and water, anchoring it securely and preparing it for winter.  

3. Cold Conditioning (Winter)  

Most bulbs native to temperate climates require a chilling period, known as vernalisation, to trigger flowering. This exposure to cold breaks the bulb’s dormancy and initiates internal chemical changes that prepare the flower bud to develop and emerge. In warmer climates, gardeners often need to pre-chill bulbs in a refrigerator to mimic this essential winter phase.  

4. Sprouting and Blooming (Spring)  

As days lengthen and temperatures rise, bulbs burst into action. Fuelled by the energy stored during the previous year, they push up shoots and leaves, and soon after, colourful blooms appear. At this stage, the bulbs rely almost entirely on stored food reserves, which is why healthy, well-fed bulbs produce more robust flowers.  

5. Post-Bloom Recovery (Late Spring to Summer)  

Once the flowers fade, it’s tempting to cut the foliage right away—but don’t! The leaves continue to photosynthesise, converting sunlight into energy that is stored in the bulb for next year’s bloom. Only remove foliage once it has turned completely yellow and withered, signalling that the bulb is ready to return to dormancy.  

How to Help Flower Bulbs Thrive  

To get the best results from your flower bulbs, it's important to provide the right conditions at each stage of their life cycle. Here are a few science-backed tips:  

Choose the right location: Most flower bulbs prefer full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Avoid areas where water pools after rain.  

Plant at the correct depth: A good rule of thumb is to plant bulbs at a depth 2–3 times their height. This helps protect them from temperature fluctuations and keeps them stable as they grow.  

Feed the soil: Incorporate compost or a slow-release bulb fertiliser when planting. Bulbs benefit from nutrient-rich soil during root development and post-bloom recovery.  

Don’t skip the chill: If you live in a mild climate, simulate winter by chilling bulbs for 10–12 weeks before planting.
