However, some aspects of growing bulbs are unfortunately out of our control. We advise that our customers open bulbs when they first arrive and plant within a specific period to get the best chance of beautiful, vibrant growth. But, one factor that people underestimate in this process is the affect that soil can have.

Many people are unaware just how pivotal the type and quality of soil in your garden can actually have on the growth of plants. For instance, if your soil is a clay soil then you'll have greater levels of water retention. This in turn leads to strong, vibrant colours in your plants. Whereas, if your soil is dry with little moisture around then your bulbs have more to contend with. The stressful conditions can mean that your bulbs struggle, and the end result is a colour that is weaker than it should be.

Now, while you may think that your garden has a great quality of soil overall, and you may have had success with planting in the past - this doesn't mean that you will necessarily have the same success again. This is because not only does soil vary in quality from one end of the country to another - but it can even vary from one end of your garden to the other!

Yes, from square metre to square metre you can have massively different types of soil to contend with, all of which can affect the way that your bulbs grow across your garden. This is why it is important to do a review of the soil in the area that you wish to plant your bulbs prior to planting.

You should check the texture of your soil and how compact the soil is. Soil can often be weighted down and compressed by heavy footfall or wet conditions. Next you should check the pH level of your soil. Soil that is too acidic (has a low pH) can stunt growth, while alkaline soil which is high in pH can also be toxic. In order to improve your soil composition, you should apply a 2-4-inch layer of compost at least once or twice a year. Other tips include leaving grass clippings on your lawn and regular rotation of flowers and crops.
