Many people tend to forget (or even not know) when they buy flower bulbs that they are buying a live product. Bulbs therefore need to be treated as a live product, and action should be taken to avoid stressing the bulb if you want to get the best possible results from it. Stressing the bulbs can severely affect their flowering performance.
Extreme - or variable - weather conditions can be a cause of stressing bulbs, particularly if you suddenly get excessive cold periods followed by excessive warm periods.
This is because bulbs have a natural growing cycle. A true bulb (such as a hyacinth) is classed as a perfect entity, with the flower having already formed inside the bulb. These need a cold period to generate root growth. Once the root growth forms, the root system develops, the flower forms and develops further within the bulb itself, and the flowering cycle gets underway.
Extreme or variable weather conditions can disrupt this flowering cycle and leave you with premature flowering or stunted flowering of your bulbs. Unfortunately, there is not a lot that can be done about it, but you should be aware that if you do experience extreme or variable weather that this can be the cause of your bulbs not performing as well as you might have expected.
